There are various institutions that certify and train employees, among other things. In the gas and water trade, the Deutscher Verein des Gas- und Wasserfaches e.V., or DVGW for short, is one of the major institutes that certify employees and companies.

In Switzerland, the Swiss Gas and Water Association, SVGW for short, is the counterpart to the German DVGW. Internationally, there are the ISO certifications (International Organization for Standardization), which offer certification in various areas and industries. According to the annually published “ISO Survey”, in 2018 there were a total of 47,482 valid certificates in Germany for the most widespread certificate, ISO 9001, which is the quality management standard that specifies the minimum requirements for a quality management system (QM system). In Switzerland, there were 7,833 in the same year.
